This is a direct quote from a CQC inspection report for a care home rated as inadequate
“•There was a lack of visible presence from the management team in the service. Managers remained in their offices for the majority of the inspection. The staff team lacked direction and we observed care was not organised effectively. • The management team had not identified shortfalls in service delivery.”
Registered managers of care homes must have oversight of everything that going on under this roof. I have lost count of the number of audits I have done where the initial walk-around resulted in the Manager (sometimes they even delegate this to a deputy or senior) starting to collect items that “should not be there”.
Registered Managers or those in control when the manager is absent MUST do at least a daily recorded walk around.
The quote above spells out the potential consequences of not doing so.
But, it’s far more than a walk-around that’s needed, it’s leadership and driving continuous improvement that’s needed and that starts by being aware of what is actually going on.
